Please do not pass the Tofurkey.
I know I'm not the only flexitarian who looks forward to Thanksgiving for the side dishes, not the turkey. Every year, I make a small show of taking the tiniest piece of white meat from the platter, then pushing it around on my plate after a bite or two, just so I won't have to answer nosy questions about my affinity or lack thereof for the traditional Thanksgiving centerpiece.
As far as meats go, I can dig some sliced deli turkey, but the baked hunks just don't do much for me. I'd rather hog out on the various companion dishes: the stuffings, the mashed potatoes, assorted vegetables, breads, and of course dessert (I had taken to baking my own pie and keeping it at home anyway due to various bizarre geopolitical forces that dictated one certain person in charge of pies no matter how many times she, say, forgot the sugar or slept through the oven buzzer; fuck that noise, kids, I am a girl who is serious about her pumpkin and bourbon pecan pies).
This year, since we're throwing our own grown-ass Thanksgiving, we've realized that we can cook anything we want. I thought about turkey substitues, but of the people surveyed, only Thommy seems to give the Tofurkey a thumbs-up, and I figure we can do better than a faux turkey for our main dish. Our party will be small, and I think all guests will be coming for Round 2, so the turkey afficionados will already have had their fill of breasts and thighs. After some deliberation, here's the menu for our happy thursday meal:
- Winter Squash (probably butternut) stuffed with Herbed Shallot Stuffing
- Mashed Potatoes w/ Goat Cheese & Sage
- Beaumont Inn's Corn Pudding
- Bourbon Cranberry Sauce
- MsHellion, are you and the Doktor interested in bringing another vegetable side?
- Tasty bakery bread (could make, but oven is going to be in overdrive already)
Ana Maria is bringing dessert, but I'll make a pumpkin pie anyway, we'll need dessert for the leftovers meals.
Does anyone have a good vegetarian-ish gravy recipe that would go well with the stuffed squash? I've seen some shiitake recipes, but I'm not sure it would work. Recommendations? Gotta have gravy.

I said it elsewhere, but a gravy of mixed wild mushrooms such as chanterelles, morels and porcinis would prolly work okay.

I have a sorely neglected bread machine that's been gathering dust since the great accidental egg-scrambling incident of 2002. You are more than welcome to borrow it.

We'll bring some giblet gravy, some kinda garlicky green vegetable (green beans or snow peas). Also, I'll bring some mesquite smoked turkey for us triptophan addicts.

Awesome. My brother will be giddy over the turkey. Am excited about garlicky veg, too!
Grown-ass Thanksgiving rules.
Should we stock anything in particular for The Small Chingasa? I know he's a non-fussy eater, but any particular diversions?

Stay away from faux anything, just be what you be. It is the failure of the weak and of the Democrats to attempt to be a watered-down version of something else in order to please everyone. As a ravenous meat-eater, I would rather see a well-done veggie meal than a white meat simulacrum.

Sounds lovely. We did our first grown-up no parents T-day last year and are repeating because it was a smashing success. Last year, we did Thai; this year we're doing Mexican -- though we've yet to set a menu.
