I'd like to thank the Academy.

It's come to my attention that my poem "Orpheus Retires" has been nominated for a Rhysling Award, which celebrates the best in SciFi/Fantasy/Horror/Weirdness poetry.

This is all quite nice! I like being nominated for awards. I had to look up the Rhysling Awards, though, because I'm not really a scifi writer or anything so I know next to nothing about their biz. I am not sure what the winners get, exactly, except bragging rights at the next [insert esoteric pursuit] Convention. Whatever, it's an honor just to be nominated! I'd like to thank my stylist, and my mama, and the entire cast of Star Trek: the Next Generation* ..!

*not a joke: I have seen nearly every episode.

Dude, that is a seriously kickass poem (poems can be kickass, right?)! I dig it. I'm a huge nerd, and I don't even know what winning a Rhysling Award gets, though my limited experience suggests that publishers and agents and stuff are generally more inclined to be nice to you when you say in your cover letter, "One of my poems won a Rhysling Award, 'cuz it was so kickass." Right?

Also, as a huge nerd, I can tell you that if you want to score some nerd-points in your acceptance speech, "Star Trek" is sooooo ten years ago. It's all about "Battlestar Galactica" these days. Say you owe it all to Katee Sackhoff, and they'll be eating nerd-chow out of the palm of your hand.

Also, if you win, apparently, you get published in the Nebula Awards anthology, which (once again, speaking as a huge nerd, here) is fucking huge, dude.

Huge. The Nebulas really are like the Oscars of the F/SF field.

Oh, Hulkster. You had me from "nerd-chow."

Ditto. Seriously, you should release a line of crackers called "Nerd-Chow."

Awesome poem, btw. I love "white noise waves"

Thanks, guys. I do strive for "kick-ass" when I write, regardless of genre or form. Poems can definitely be kick-ass, Hulks - at least, the ones I like all are. :)

Um, I like it, but I am apparently missing the more science-fictiony levels on which it operates. Was "Persephone" a famous Cylon or something?

I know, right? Apparently, it falls under the more expansive umbrella of "speculative" - which includes everything just this weird of center, I guess?

I don't understand it, either, but my friend Mark is an editor and he often asks for my weirder works.
