Today's reading: when you're pulled in at least two directions.
A haiku from Buson:
Cover my head
or my feet?
The winter quilt.

Wow, I love that one. How did that old 5-7-5 thing come about anyway? I mean, besides 4th grade?

Haiku come from tanka, which were written using a 5-7-5 7-7 Japanese syllable/sound pattern. The longer, linked versions are renga. The first part of tanka, the 5-7-5 lines, are hokku, or haiku.
The problem with translation or writing haiku in English is they end up longer because of the difference in syllable/sounds between the languages.
Can you tell I just spent time with Gregmaster Pape?

This haiku is rendered moot with the invention of the Slanket!

Wow, that's a lot of cash for a big piece of fleece with sleeves.
The copy on the site is funnier if you imagine Derek Zoolander reading it.

I had Greg for a semester but he never really exposed me to any of this? Maybe you could make me some handouts some time, or let me borrow some stuff? (I promose I won't have it as long as the Lenny Bruce book!)

I definitely have handouts I can copy. Remind me when I get back from Par-ee?
